Jennie Serepta Dean, former slave and visionary founded the first boarding school for African-Americans in Northern Virginia after the Civil War. The school motto was to “educate the head, the heart, and the hands.” The Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth opened in 1893, providing academic subjects, industrial and agricultural trades, and a “normal course” teacher training. The entry columns of The Carnegie Library remain as a tribute to donor Andrew Carnegie and to founder Jennie Dean. On The National Register of Historic Places, The Manassas Industrial School/Jennie Dean Memorial is operated by The Manassas Museum System of the City of Manassas.
